Da Doo Ron Ron - "A 'femme-centric' selection of
back-combed harmonizing". The Guardian - Number 1 Clubs 'Pick
Of The Week' November 2003 - kickstart the New Year with
a 60s girl group shindig on Saturday
January 17th @ the Sussex
Arts Club, 7, Ship St, Brighton, BN1.
Established in October 1998 (in North London), Da Doo Ron Ron is a 60s orientated club night with a unique slant. In a tribute to original 'girl power', DDRR DJs Chris Da Doo King & Si Bridger only spin female-fronted tracks from the swingin' sixties and early seventies. You will never hear a male lead vocal at DDRR! The club's musical menu is a femme-centric celebration of 60's girl groups such as The Supremes, Ronettes, Marvelettes, Shangri-La's, Chiffons, Crystals etc, sassy soul sisters like Aretha, Dusty Springfield, Maxine Brown, Brenda Holloway and playful popstrels in the vein of Petula Clark, Lesley Gore and Helen Shapiro. DA DOO RON RON - the one & only 60s girl group club! You'll NEVER hear a MALE lead vocal @ DDRR! DA DOO RON RON - A BRIEF HISTORY by promoter & DJ Chris King During our residency at Po Na Na, I secured a number of stellar guest DJ's, most notably the quifftastic stand-up Mark Lamarr, whom I approached directly via one of his pals, knowing he was a big girl group fan and who, to our delight, jumped at the chance to do it. Other illustrious guests have included Andy Smith of Portishead, Bob Stanley of St Etienne and Chris Geddes of Belle & Sebastian. Whilst both northern soul legend Ady Croasdell and Andy Lewis, the co-founder of London's famous Blow Up club, have appeared twice. When the Highbury Po Na Na closed down we moved to the Kensington High Street Po Na Na. After a successful run DDRR was offered - and accepted - a prestigious Friday night slot Upstairs At The Garage (Highbury Corner). However, when I moved to Brighton, the logistics of running a regular London club night proved too much and apart from the occasional one-off (Xmas parties mostly) DDRR retired from the Capital's club scene. Since moving to Brighton, as well as the occasional one-off, DDRR enjoyed a succesful run of monthly dates at the Hanbury Ballroom from July until November 2001. 2003 is potentially a very big year for Da Doo Ron Ron. I have compiled a 50 track various artists compilation CD entitled 'A Cellarful Of Noise - Da Doo Ron Ron Classics Volume 1' and this is scheduled for release via the Sequel / Castle Music/ Sanctuary Group imprint later this year.
